Top Signs You Need a Termite Inspection

Termites will feed on wood and dead plants in their natural environment. However, your home could also be their next destination for a meal, and that is the last thing you want happening. They can cause a lot of damage to your home, so it is best to get an inspection done at the first sign of a termite problem. Here are some of the top signs that you need a termite inspection today.

Warped Wood

If you have a termite infestation, you may notice that the wood in your home is warped. That can make it difficult to open and close doors and windows. This happens because termites will naturally create moisture when they eat. The hollow wood tunnels they create will also fill in with moisture naturally.

The moisture in the wood will cause warping that looks like water damage or bubbling paint, so don’t automatically assume that it is water damage! It could very well mean that you have a termite problem.

Termite Droppings

In Southern California, drywood termites are a prevalent species. And one thing that they do differently than subterranean termites is they do not use their droppings when they build their tunnels. Instead, they will push their droppings out from small holes. They can be found discarded near their nest entrance. So if you see a lot of small, wood-colored droppings, it is a sign that the wood-eating pest is in your home.

Termite Sounds

Termites may be small, but they can still make a lot of noise. Soldier termites may hit their heads against the wood or shake their bodies. These actions can result in what we would make out to be clicking sounds. Put your ear to the wall and you may even hear worker termites in your walls. They can be noisy when they are eating away at the wood!

Hollow Wood

Often times termites will go on living in your home for long periods of time without being noticed. This is due to how they eat. They will typically eat wood starting from the inside and work their way outward. Tap on the wood in your home. Does it have a hollow or paper-like sound? This may be because termites have eaten away at the inside of the wood.

Discarded Wings

Swarmers, or winged termites, will leave their nests to find a new location to mate and begin new colonies. Once they have found a new location, they will discard their wings. And that new location may be your home! Finding a pile of discarded wings near your windows or doors is not a good sign. You should call to get a termite inspection right away.
