Globally, mice and rats spread over 35 diseases. These pests also contaminate food and water sources, leave foul odors, rapidly breed and shred or destroy objects. No one wants these tiny creatures in their homes. Luckily, there are many ways to make sure they stay out. Check out these pest control tips for rats and mice

Tip#1: Set Up Prevention Measures

If you do not want these pests from entering your home or lingering around your property, you need to set up preventative measures. For homes that do not have an infestation, place mesh screens over windows or doors to stop them from entering. You can also spray your home or yard with chemicals to deter them. However, it is crucial to follow all the instructions on the bottle, as many treatments are toxic for people and pets. If you do have rats in your home, you can set up rat traps.

Tip#2: Check Inside and Outside for Openings

Mice or rats can squeeze into holes as small as a dime. There can be many small holes or cracks throughout your home that you may not know about. As a good rule of thumb, check for openings inside and outside your house once per season. If you do notice any small spaces, fill or close them up.

Tip#3: Inspect Boxes and Bags

These pests love hiding away in dark, warm places, especially if they have food or water. Any time you bring boxes or bags into your home, thoroughly inspect the outside and the contents inside the containers before you bring them inside the house. If rats or mice are hiding out in these containers, then you can release them back into the wild with them never entering your home.

Tip#4: Store Food and Water Properly

All pests need access to food and water for survival. Cut off their supply by sealing all food in airtight containers, removing all moisture or water, wiping counters and floors and taking out the trash. Crumbs entice these pests to stay, so you must clean your home daily. The messier your home is, the more inviting it is for mice and rats.
