How to Keep Pests Out of Your Kitchen

Your kitchen is the heart of your home. All the food you feed your family comes from the kitchen, so it is important to keep it clean. Pests in the kitchen are unappealing and downright dangerous. If you want to keep your Southern California kitchen looking great and pest free, keep reading for some practical tips on keeping pests out of your kitchen.

Pests Like Dirty Kitchens

The cleaner your kitchen is, the less likely you will have pest problems. Mice, ants and cockroaches are looking for tiny bits of food to eat. If you have already cleaned them up, there is nothing drawing them to your kitchen. Make a habit of sweeping up crumbs and wiping down counter tops frequently.

Enjoy Cracks, Crevices and Unsealed Food

Unsealed windows or doors are a pest’s best friend. Any small crack or crevice that an insect or rodent can crawl through is bad news for your kitchen. Take care to seal all cracks in walls and floors to cut off pest roadways. Make sure that all of your food is sealed as well. Don’t give pests a way into your kitchen and your food.

Don’t Survive in the Freezer

Keep flour, sugar and other bulk goods out of the pantry and in the freezer. Insects easily find their way into flour and can lay eggs and ruin an entire bag quickly. If you keep those goods in the freezer, they are sealed away from the reach of insects. Since no pests can survive the freezer, it’s a great place to keep a lot of food.

Don’t Like Essential Oils

Scents that smell good to us are repellents for pests. Put a few drops of peppermint essential oil in cracks or corners where you notice pests gathering to drive them away. Eucalyptus or clove oil will also work well, plus they give your kitchen a fresh scent.

Like Hard to Reach Spots

If you want to keep pests away, you will need to put in some elbow grease to clean those hard to reach places. Crumbs and liquids that fall beside and underneath your stove are a goldmine for insects. Go the extra mile and move your stove and refrigerator frequently to clean up all the out-of-the-way spots
